WTware for Raspberry Pi is thin clients operating system, that creates connections to Windows Remote Desktop Services. Raspberry Pi with installed WTware displays Windows Desktop and Windows applications, that are running on Windows Terminal Server, like usual office x86 computer with mstsc.exe

WTware — thin client operating system

To work with Terminal Server common practice is to install Windows on users computers and run Remote Desktop Connection. We recommend to remove users hard disks and boot WTware by network instead of Windows installation. The result in both cases — Windows Terminal Server desktop on users screen.

WTware is optimized for network boot, but thin clients may boot also from local media.

WTware is easy to configure, it includes services for network boot, it’s graphic configurator makes workplaces tuning as simple as possible.

WTware works with all common RDP servers we know, up to Windows Server 2019.

WTware can connect to four Terminal Servers at the same time.

You can connect printer, bar-code scanner to thin client, logon to Windows by smart-card.

It’s easy to replace workplace for all the settings are stored on server, programs are on server, user data is on server.

Raspberry Pi

Raspberry Pi is a credit card sized motherboard with memory and Broadcom ARM-processor, that costs $35 at English manufacturer site. Monitor USB hub power is enough for Raspberry Pi, no need in additional power supply.

You just plug in mouse and keyboard, connect it to monitor and you’re ready to go.

Old Raspberry Pi versions were with another processor, 1 kernel and less than 1GB RAM. Please, pay attention when buying, for WTware won’t work on versions other than Raspberry Pi 4, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B+, Raspberry Pi 3 Model B and Raspberry Pi 2 Model B.

WTware for Raspberry Pi

WTware for Raspberry Pi can boot from local SD-card or by network. Since Pi 3B+ you need microSD card only for local boot, network boot is performed automatically.

  1. Download and install WTware for Raspberry Pi on server.
  2. Run on server WTware graphic configurator, press button and create SD card for local boot (or for versions before 3B+ for network boot) using WTware wizard:

Configuration files structure is the same as in WTware for all devices. You can use graphic configurator, just remember, that half of parameters are not supported yet.

Monitor resolution for Pi is stored in config.txt file on SD card, not in WTware configuration files. On Raspberry Pi manufacturer site you can find all settings for config.txt file. By default Raspberry Pi sets 1920×1080 resolution.

Raspberry Pi was tested with old cheap 18.5" Philips 191V monitor connected by HDMI-DVI cable in it’s standart resolution 1366×768. If Pi works with such device in such resolution, then it should work with most other digital (HDMI and DVI) monitors in other resolutions. For 1366×768 resolution by HDMI-DVI cable these two lines must be specified:

Sound, FAT32/exFAT/NTFS disks, printers, scanners, USB-COM ports redirection work now.

WTware for Raspberry Pi performance is sufficient for performing office tasks.

Raspberry Pi

WTware для Raspberry Pi

WTware для Raspberry Pi может грузиться с локальной SD-карты или по сети. Для Raspberry Pi 3B+ и выше для загрузки по сети карта microSD не нужна, загрузка происходит автоматически.

  1. Скачайте и поставьте WTware для Raspberry Pi на сервер.
  2. Запустите на сервере графический конфигуратор WTware, затем нажмите кнопку и создайте SD карту для локальной загрузки (или сетевой загрузки для ранних версий Raspberry Pi), используя мастер создания карты WTware:

Схема конфигурационных файлов та же, что и у обычной втвари. Можно использовать графический конфигуратор, надо только помнить, что половина параметров еще не поддерживаются.

Разрешение монитора для Pi настраивается не в конфигурационных файлах WTware, а в файле config.txt на загрузочной SD карте. На сайте разработчика Raspberry Pi для файла config.txt описаны все настройки видео. По умолчанию Raspberry Pi устанавливает разрешение 1920х1080.

Raspberry Pi была протестирована со старым дешевым 18.5" монитором Philips 191V по HDMI-DVI кабелю в стандартном разрешении 1366×768. Если Pi работает с таким устройством в этом разрешении, значит стоит ожидать работы с большинством других цифровых (HDMI и DVI) мониторов в других разрешениях. Для работы в 1366х768 по HDMI-DVI кабелю необходимо указать в файле config.txt две строки::

Должны работать звук, диски с FAT32/exFAT/NTFS, принтеры, планшетные сканеры, перенаправление USB-COM портов.

Производительности WTware для Raspberry Pi достаточно для выполнения офисных задач.

RPiTC x64 Live Distro

Finally the RPiTC x64 Live Distro is here! 🙂

What I need to run it?
— A PC with x86_64 CPU (Intel or AMD)
— A USB pendrive (2Gb min.)
— Minimal BIOS knowledge to bootup a USB pendrive

How I run it?
— Just use a image writer (for example LiLi USB Creator) to create a bootable USB pendrive.
— plug the USB pendrive in your PC, start it and tell the BIOS to boot from the USB device.

Ok, cool, but I want to install it!
No problem! After the boot open a terminal and run: sudo ubiquity (default user/pass is rpitc/rpitc), then follow the installer instructions.

At the end of the ubiquity procedure just unplug the USB pendrive and the PC will boot with the RPiTC x64 OS.
Now just customize a little bit here and there and you have your ThinClient OS ready.

RPiTC v3 1.01 release

Just few days after the v3 0.99 we release this new 1.01 version.
There is an arm platform specific bug in the new systemd 231-1/libseccomp that will cause delay on start due to journal flush problem. So, at the time of writing better to stay with systemd 230 and wait for a patch.

RPiTC v3 0.99 Stable Released!

Raspberry Pi 3 has been released!

Four years after the launch of the first Raspberry Pi, the Raspberry Pi Foundation has just announced the Raspberry Pi 3 Model B.

What’s new/What’s not
The new SoC is the BCM2837, a quad-core 1.2GHz 64-bit ARMv8-A Cortex-A53 (up from a quad-core 900 MHz ARMv7 in the Pi 2).
Also the VideoCore is now clocked at 400MHz for video processing (up from 250MHz) and the 3D graphics processor running at 300MHz (up from 250MHz).
One of the most welcome changes is the addition of onboard WiFi and Bluetooth. The WiFi is compatible with 2.4GHz 802.11 b/g/n networks and the Bluetooth 4.1 supports BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) both are supplied by the BCM43438.
Other components are (sadly), pretty much the same as the Pi 2. 1Gb RAM, 4 USB 2.0 ports, 10/100 ethernet, HDMI port, 3.5mm analog audio and composite video jack, CSI and DSI connectors for cameras and displays, microSD slot and the same 40 GPIO pins.
A new kernel with WiFi/Bluetooth drivers is already available and at the moment the Raspberry Pi Foundation are evaluating if porting to 64bit the official NOOB OS.

New Raspberry Pi 3 on RPiTC:
— Compared with the base Raspberry Pi 2 the CPU is running at a 33% faster clock rate (1.2GHz vs 0.9GHz) the more modern core also means a more efficient instruction set (especially when performing operations on 64-bit values). I don’t know if is possible to overclock the new CPU like the old Pi1/Pi2 so compared to the standard RPiTC2 v1.99 the difference in clock is just 0.1Ghz.
— VideoCore and VP higher clock will not give any performance boost to our RPiTC.
— Integrated WiFi is a good news, we spare a USB port 🙂
— Bluetooth is also a good addition, can’t live without my all-in-one keyboard+trackpad combo 🙂
— 1Gb RAM is enought for RPiTC, we didn’t need more in most configurations (browser like iceweasel/chromium will still suffer a lot. )
— USB 2.0 ports hub has been improved, now some power hungry devices will work, but still v2.0 not v3.0
— 10/100 ethernet, no Geth, really? Well.

Last RPiTC2 v1.99 will partially work in the new Raspberry Pi3 board. Ill release (in two weeks) a new RPiTC3 ready version fully compatible with Pi2 and Pi3. In the meanwhile if you want to test the new Pi3 with RPiTC2 you have to manually update the Kernel and the blobs files.
I have no plan to create a 64bit RPiTC OS version, at the moment most TC related client are ARMv7 only.
